Students: Why was Fernandez fired?

During the assembly called by the Associated Students of NMC on Wednesday, majority of them were “surprised” about the termination of Fernandez’s contract.

ASNMC president Miles Rodriguez said they were concerned about the impact of the termination on the college’s accreditation.

Rodriguez said the students decided to ask the NMC board of regents to join the next assembly.

More than 60 students attended the gathering on Wednesday, she said.

“We  want the board of regents to clarify the issues surrounding the termination of the college president,” she added.

Fernandez was suspended for three month before she was fired for allegedly changing the grades of some students.

Rodriguez said it would be better for the students to directly hear from the regents.

During the assembly, majority of the students also opposed  the proposal to rename NMC to Gov. Carlos S. Camacho-Northern Marianas College.”

“The students want status quo with regards to  the name,” Rodriguez said.

The college was established during the administration of Camacho, the CNMI’s first governor.

The ASNMC, Rodriguez said, will submit its comments  to House Bill 17-41 introduced by Rep. Eliceo D. Cabrera, R-Saipan.

The bill will rename the college in honor of Camacho.

According to Cabrera’s bill, Camacho is responsible for strengthening the college and consolidating the administration of various local and federal programs concerning education.

Rodriguez said the students want lawmakers to conduct a public hearing on the measure.
