As of last week, 18 have already completed the program which includes reading at least 15 books, according to Erlinda C. Naputi, children’s library associate.
The recognition will start at 10 a.m. at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library Children of our Homeland Center in Susupe.
The Summer Reading Program is open to children aged six to 12.
Naputi said children who are into the program are asked to write a summary of every book they have read. The library provides the books.
The required books include the Caldecott Award books, Newberry Award books, Coretta Scott King Award, AR books at your level, and Movie Night Books.
Naputi said the children are also given the option to choose the book they want to read.
“There were first timers in the program,” Naputi said, adding that parents are very supportive of the activity.
She said the program aims to promote literacy among schoolchildren.
“Finish reading 15 books and get a reading certificate and you will automatically get a chance to pick from our treasure chest to win a prize,” Naputi told participants of the program.
Naputi said the program is another feature of the two-month Summer Reading Fun that began in June.
They also have a program for children aged four to 12 to learn about the basic sign language and be involved in cultural activities.
Naputi said their activities aim help children enhance their creativity and the love for books.
