Survey: Husbands, ex-husbands and ex-boyfriends account for 30 % of female homicide

This is a big figure which is in contrast to the just over three percent of male homicide victims who were known to have been killed by their wives, former wives or girlfriends.

The survey also showed that women are attacked about six times more, often by offenders with whom they had intimate relationships.   

It was found that husbands, former husbands, boyfriends and ex-boyfriends committed more than one million violent acts against women.

Husbands, former husbands and ex-boyfriends were also found to have committed 26 percent of rapes and sexual assaults. The survey showed that female victim of violence were more likely to be injured when attacked by someone they knew that female victims of violence who were attacked by strangers.

The survey also showed that 45 percent of all violent attacks against female victims 12 years old and older by multiple offenders involve offenders known to the victims. It was also found that the rate of intimate-offenders attacks on women separated from their husbands was about three times higher than that of divorced women and about 25 times higher than that of married women.

In the CNMI, projects supported by federal funds under the STOP Violence Against Women Assistance Programs encourage women to break the silence and end the violence at home.

Violence Against Women advocacy groups encourage victims to build a safety plan to protect themselves from the abusers.

Bookmarks, posters and other helpful reference materials were on display at the Justice Hall of Susupe for the Probation Week last week to help possible victims of domestic violence to know what to do to combat violence.
