Community outreach worker Evonne Sablan said “celebrity bagging” is among the activities that help raise cancer awareness in the community.
It is one of the many activities of CCA in commemorating October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The “celebrity baggers” donate the tips they get shoppers to local cancer programs.
Department of Public Health acting program coordinator Joanne Ogo said they raised $12.95 at Joeten Supermarket two weekends ago.
Sablan said celebrity bagging has been conducted annually on island since 1996.
Last Saturday, the celebrity bagging activity was held at Joeten Susupe, Hannam Market in Koblerville and Payless Supermarket in Chalan Kanoa.
The celebrity bagging, Sablan said, focuses on breast cancer awareness.
The CNMI Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan of 2007 indicated that of the 304 cases of cancer in females, 29 percent were breast cancer.
Today, CCA will donate $200 while the First Lady Foundation will donate $500 to the Ayuda Network, a community partner in the cancer awareness coalition.
