Teacher arrested for impregnating student

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo imposed a $50,000 cash bail on Jonathan M. Diaz, 27, yesterday.

Diaz was remanded to the custody of the Department of Corrections after the hearing.

He is being held on the charge of sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree.

Police Officer Herbert C. Borja said Division of Youth Services officer Agusta Famaw reported a sexual abuse of a minor case to DPS Tinian on Oct. 7.

Diaz and his mother Delores  visited the victim at her residence last Saturday, police said.

“Diaz and his mom were very excited about [the victim’s] pregnancy and were talking to [the victim’s mother] about their excitement of expecting a grandchild,” Borja said.

Diaz said “he was sorry,” when asked by the victim’s mother “how he could do it to her daughter,” a minor.

Last June, the victim told Diaz not to tell her mother after telling him that they could be boyfriend and girlfriend.

The victim first met Diaz at the house of Rhea Quichocho in Marpo Heights, “where they hung out together,” police said.

The following month, Diaz brought the victim to his house and introduced her to his parents as his girlfriend.

Diaz gave the victim an early pregnancy test kit after he was told by the student that she might be pregnant.

The victim’s mother told Famaw that she did not consent to her daughter having a sexual relationship with Diaz.

The victim’s skipping classes was noticed sometime last month after a teacher informed Tinian High School acting principal Julian Hofschneider who was also told about the rumor that the victim and Diaz were having a relationship.

On Sept. 18, Hofschneider met Diaz who explained that “some students are more comfortable sharing their ‘problems’ with him.”

The acting school principal advised Diaz that he should refer students to a certified counselor.

Hofschneider also reminded Diaz that he was a faculty member who “must draw the line of authority with the students.”

On Oct. 4, Diaz tendered his resignation after admitting his relationship with the victim.

Diaz also asked about the possibility of his being transferred to Tinian Elementary School.
