Thousands of water consumers affected by low supply

CUC water division manager Mario Iglecias yesterday attributed the problem to the delay in the repair of water wells because of funding constraint.

“This is a management call,” he said. “They have to prioritize what problem to address first — water, sewer or  power. On the administrative side, they have to consider also the payroll of the workers.”

Rep. Joseph C. Reyes, R-Saipan and  chairman of the House Committee Commerce and Tourism, is asking CUC Executive Director Antonio S. Muna to address the problem of insufficient water supply in Tottotville and Koblerville.

In his letter to Muna, Reyes said he received complaints from residents about the inconsistencies of their water hours.

“Some residents informed me that on many occasions, water is not available for days creating great hardship for everyone,” he said, adding that personal hygiene suffers especially for school children.

Toilets, he added, cannot be flushed.

Reyes asked CUC to observe a standard operating procedure, and to inform the affected residents of their scheduled water distribution.

As of yesterday, six of the 17 wells in Isley Field were down, affecting the water distribution in the Fina Sisu, Kannat Tabla, Middle Road, Beach Road and Oleai areas.

Iglecias said they need to repair the transformer but their request for a purchase order has been pending at the power division since Oct. 23.

The Isley Field problem is affecting more than 6,000 customers, he said.

In Obyan, two of the 18 water wells are still inoperative, affecting the Chalan Kanoa and Susupe areas.

The daily water operation report shows that water supply in As Matuis, San Roque and Tanapag is low due to the one well at the Marpi Quarry that went down.

At least 150 households in Koblerville are affected while Well 23 remains inoperative.

When Donnie Spring  is under repair, it affects the areas of Navy Hills and Garapan areas, Iglecias said.
