Three arrested for theft of company checks

In yesterday’s bail hearing, Superior Court associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo ordered Milton Camacho and Zenita B. Cabrera, both 27 years old, and 26-year-old Barbie Ann B. Borja to post a $10,000 cash bail each after finding that probable cause exists to charge them with theft by deception and receiving stolen property.

The court confiscated the passports of the three defendants and prohibited them from leaving the CNMI. They are also ordered to observe a 7 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew.

Govendo set the preliminary hearing for July 16 and the arraignment for July 21.

In an affidavit, Detective Vincent K. Basa said they received information on June 18 about some stolen checks from a business establishment in Susupe.

Basa said a source told him that Cabrera admittedentering an establishment behind the Arizona Sports Bar in Susupe and stealing an undetermined amount of company checks. The defendant also admitted cashing the checks.

On June 20, Leung Kuan Yon, the owner of the establishment filed a theft complaint for several company checks he lost.

Yon said he received a call from an employee of the City Trust Bank informing him they received company checks belonging to him  although the account was no longer active.

The checks were for Freedom Inc. which Leung Kuan Yon owns.

Leung Kuan Yon said he examined the checks and found signatures and ID card numbers issued by the Saipan Mayor’s Office to three different persons.

Basa said he verified the ID numbers and learned that the IDs were issued to the three defendants.

Further investigation showed that the checks were cashed  at different stores where the defendants bought several items.

The stores have filed criminal complaints which will be forwarded to the Attorney General’s Office along with other complaints from companies who were also victimized by the defendants.

Cabrera and Borja are currently on probation while Camacho has been involved in various illegal drug-related activities.
