San Nicolas, Covenant-Tinian, in an interview yesterday said there should be some cuts because current collections no longer meet the government’s expenditure levels.
He said he is waiting for the Tinian legislative delegation chairman, Senate Vice President Jude U. Hofschneider, to call an emergency meeting as soon as possible and to address the municipality’s financial crisis.
The delegation and the Tinian Municipal Council, San Nicolas said, should come together for an emergency session.
San Nicolas said a paycut will be unfair to the low-income personnel.
It will be unfair for someone earning $17,000, for example, to get the same paycut rate imposed on those earning above $30,000.
“They will feel the pain more. So, its’ very safe to go by percentage,” San Nicolas said, adding that addressing the issue can not be delayed further.
Last week, Tinian Mayor Ray Dela Cruz told Hofschneider and Tinian Councilman Patrick Manglona that the gaming commission’s reinstatement of 80 working hours will subject the municipality to unfunded liability and deficit for the current fiscal year
Each commissioner gets some $100,000 a year in salary and benefits.
San Nicolas said he is ready to take part in any emergency session because “I don’t want to see lowly paid employees on Tinian not getting their paychecks.”
