Tourist dies after near drowning incident

Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Lei Ogumoro said DPS received a report about the incident at 9:43 a.m. on June 25.

The victim was identified as Toshitsugi Tanoue.

Ogumoro said based on the preliminary investigation, two other tourists who were also swimming in the area noticed Tanoue floating in the water on top of his beach mat with his face down.

The witnesses said the victim showed no signs of movement.

The witnesses immediately sought the help of a nearby lifeguard after they noticed the “white foam coming out from the mouth and nose of the victim,” who was immediately brought ashore.

The lifeguard administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation on him while police and medics were called.

The victim was later transported to the Commonwealth Health Center’s intensive care unit, where he was placed on life support.

Ogumoro said  yesterday, at 2 a.m., the victim was pronounced dead by Dr. Leo Arcilla.

“For now, police officers have classified this case as a near drowning incident. However, the cause of the victim’s death is still under investigation,” Ogumoro said.
