Turtle advocates art exhibit ends, organizers pleased with turnout

He said during Saturday afternoon’s reception that the exhibit was the first one they held that was sponsored by TAGS.

“We hope to do another one soon, and we hope to have more artwork from different local artists,” Robertson said.

The artists mingled with guests during the reception, sharing stories of how, where and when particular pictures were taken or artwork sketched and drawn and other information about their works.

The artwork on display at the Marianas Eye Institute on Beach Road included paintings, sketches, photographs, ceramics, storyboards or intricate woodworks and other forms of art — all portraying turtles and ocean life. They were priced from $30 and up.

The participating artists included Benjamin Wood, Joe Weaver, Greg Elliott, Mark James, Leslie Ware, Susan Taylor, Norbert Garcia, Nhorleen Bitco, Michael Ernest and Mark Robertson.

TAGS, a group of local volunteers formed to ensure survival of the endangered sea turtles, got 20 percent of the proceeds from artwork sold.

Robertson said all the unsold artwork will be returned to the artists. Also on exhibit were drawings of turtles done by elementary school students from Saipan.
