The weeklong exhibit, sponsored by the Turtle Advocate and Guardian Society or TAGS, opened yesterday and will end on May 21.
Marianas Eye Institute ophthalmologist Dr. Mark D. Robertson said artists Leslie Ware, Norbert Garcia, Susan Taylor, Mark James, Ross Benjamin Wood, Nhorleen Bitco and Mark D. Robertson have joined the exhibit.
He said Greg Elliot is also expected to have some pieces for exhibit by tomorrow.
“Included in the exhibits are photographs from 8 x 10 up to 20 x 30 and larger, paintings, ceramics, and more,” Robertson said.
Most of the artwork is available for sale, with at least 20 percent of the proceeds going to TAGS, a group of local volunteers attempting to ensure survival of the endangered sea turtles. The rest of the money will go back to the artists.
TAGS has noted the precipitous drop in the number of sea turtles returning to Saipan shores to nest and lay eggs.
TAGS said if current trends continue, in only very few years no sea turtles will return here at all. For instance, last year one half of the sea turtles attempting to lay eggs were poached and killed.
Robertson said the art exhibit is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Saturday, May 21.
A reception will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday where the guests can buy artwork that they want and interact with the artists. The artists will also discuss their work and answer questions from the community. Food will be served.
Robertson said by purchasing art, people can support local artists, help save an endangered species, and find that perfect work to hang on the wall, set on the coffee table, or give as a present.
Photographers and artists can set their own prices for their artwork.
TAGS is a non-profit organization that works with law enforcement on Saipan to discourage poaching, also funds turtle rehabilitation and release primarily for rescued poached turtles.
