“Understanding Workers Compensation Law,” which will be presented by Frank D. Cabrera, director of the CNMI Workers Compensation Commission.
The lunch meeting will be held at the Pacific Islands Club-Charley’s Cabaret on Thursday, April 28, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
This presentation is open to the public and will be an invaluable opportunity for employers and employees to learn more about the application of workers compensation law in the commonwealth which was enacted in 1989 and became known as the CNMI workers compensation program.
The main purpose of the WC law is to provide financial protection for both employers and employees from the catastrophic effects of work related injuries, illnesses, or deaths.
It is a social insurance plan that compensates employees for disabilities incurred from work related injuries regardless of fault.
It is also a no-fault insurance program, solely paid by the employer.
Cabrera will explain the workers compensation law and discuss important topics such as:
1) Who is the Workers Compensation Commission and what do they do?
2) Are all employers required to purchase WC insurance?
3) What are the employer reporting requirements for any work related injuries, illnesses or death?
4) What benefits does WC insurance provide?
5) What does WC insurance cost and who provides it?
6) What are the consequences of not purchasing WC insurance and filing with the WCC?
7) How do WC claims get filed and processed?
The presentation includes lunch and the cost is $20 for SHRM members and $30 for non-members. Seats are limited, so reserve your seat by contacting SHRM CNMI president Polly DLG Masga, at 237-5122 or e-mail her at [email protected].
