US officials meet with NMI high school students

The event was attended by students from all five public high schools on Saipan, Tinian, Rota, with Kagman High School participating via video conference.

Harris encouraged the students to ask any questions pertaining to education.

Many concerns raised by the students were about the lack of funding provided to those who want to attend college.

Harris replied, “I believe that if you maintain good academics that there will be funding available to you no matter where you go. If you have the drive and the motivation, you will succeed.”

Other students asked Harris about their peers who do not prioritize education.

Kimiko Wally of Marianas High School asked Harris  what advice he would give to those who “disqualify education out of their lives.”

Harris said education is the key to a better life.

“We are in a time where more knowledge is needed in our lives more than ever before and it is critical to keep up with academics especially in these trying times,” he added.

Following the forum, Harris was presented with a plaque of appreciation.

Wally, in an interview, said: “Dr. Harris has really inspired me to inspire others to continue their education and this forum helped me to realize that there is a point to getting an education.”

Other students said they were honored by the presence of the U.S. officials.

“Dr. Carl Harris and Crystal Martinez’s visit was necessary and critical for our islands especially during an economic crisis that has already impacted our educational system,” one of the students said.
