Brandon Russel Camacho
THE suspect in an assault incident whose video went viral, Brandon Russel Camacho, has surrendered, said Simon Manacop, assistant chief of police and acting public information officer of the Department of Public Safety.
“He has been booked at the Department of Corrections,” Manacop said Friday evening.
Camacho, 40, is a U.S. Army veteran who held the rank of staff sergeant and was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
DPS earlier stated that the suspect was “uncooperative and … in hiding.”
The assault occurred Wednesday at Welcome Market in San Roque.
A video of the incident shows a man in a green shirt and dark hat striking a shirtless man with a bat.
According to Manacop, “The person without a shirt encountered his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend inside the store. He was then confronted by the suspect at the entrance and struck with the bat.”
Manacop said the suspect is the new boyfriend — identified as the man wearing a green shirt and dark hat.
Attorney Charity Hodson, who represents Camacho, issued the following statement on Sunday: “The arrest warrant was issued Aug. 8, 2025. Mr. Camacho had retained counsel on Aug. 7, 2025, and that same day counsel was in contact with DPS regarding the alleged incident.”
She denied that Camacho was “uncooperative and hiding,” adding that she had “informed DPS that Mr. Camacho was represented by counsel and would self-surrender upon a lawful arrest warrant.”
