Visitation center for victims of domestic violence to open soon

Connecting Families Inc., a private, non-profit organization that will build the center held a community information day at the Pacific Islands Club.

The session was attended by representatives from the Family Violence Task Force, the Domestic Violence Intervention Center, the Department of Public Safety, the Office of Adult Probation, the Board of Parole, and counselors from Public School System.

Connecting Families Executive Director Neda B. Camacho said they are trying to bring the community and agencies together because “we are going to be working with them collaboratively.”

The participants, Camacho said, got the chance to hear from off-island speakers, Lauren Litton, Elizabeth McNamara and Jennifer Rose, who talked about how a supervised visitation center works and how it benefits the community.

The guest speakers are from the Office on Violence Against Women.

Created in 2003,  Connecting Families welcomes all families who experience domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and child abuse.

“We can’t be a mediator and we can’t try to bring couples back together. That is not our point. We are strictly doing supervised visitation and safe exchanges,” Camacho said.
