LIEUTENANT Gov. David M. Apatang, in his capacity as acting governor, on Thursday signed a proclamation designating May as National Water Safety Month.
The proclamation calls for educating the public about safe practices while enjoying the ocean, swimming pool, or other bodies of water.
“Water safety is always a critical part of our community,” Apatang said. “It’s imperative we take care of that, especially for our kids. As for pools at hotels, we have to make sure we have lifeguards there at all times.”
Glenn Policare, president and co-owner of Western Pacific Training Solutions, said: “As co-sponsors of this proclamation, along with the World Waterpark Association, we are more than happy to help increase awareness of water safety here in the CNMI. We are proud to deliver American Red Cross training to lifeguards across the island and assist with learn-to-swim programs islandwide. Our company motto is ‘Helping You Help Others.’ If everyone can do their part and remain aware in and around the water, together we can continue to keep our community safe.”
He said, “While tourism is everyone’s business, water safety is everybody’s responsibility.”
