Wise Women Village Project marks 3rd anniversary on Aug. 27

Rose Dance School instructor Eden Quizon told the Variety that the event will showcase dance performances and other entertainment numbers from all the participants of the free healthy ballroom dance classes in Susupe, Gualo Rai and at the Carolinian Village.

Cuizon and his  fellow dance instructors Resty Joson and Allen Cuyugan from Rose School of Dance have been giving free lessons in ballroom and Latin dancing to an increasing number of participants in the three separate venues each week for the past year.

The free dance classes offered by Rose Dance School in Garapan are part of a program of the Department of Public Health in cooperation with the Saipan Mayor’s Office and the Wise Women Village Project.

Medical director Dr. Gary Ramsey said the program aims “to urge the community to engage in physical exercise and have fun while doing it.”

Ramsey said the contract for the Wise Women Village Project ends this month, and he does not know if the Department of Public Health plans to apply for another grant to renew it.

He said this means they will no longer conduct regular health screenings for women in villages as they have been doing in the past three years.

The Wise Woman Village Project conducts regular outreach, health screening and education in the different villages on Saipan to address non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and cervical cancer in addition to tobacco use assessment and cessation referral.

Ramsey said they have applied for another grant to continue the healthy ballroom dance classes.
