WSR school joins peace day celebration

The students created a visual public statement by planting “pinwheels for peace” on the  school grounds.

One of the “Pinwheels for Peace” event coordinators, Rebecca J. Flores, the school’s counselor, said students also wrote about their thoughts about war and peace, tolerance and living in harmony with others.

On one side of the pinwheels, they  drew images that expressed their feelings, she added.

The students also sang the peacebuilders’ song.

“The spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings about peace throughout the school, the island and the world,” Flores said.

WSR principal Naomi Nishimura said they postponed the peace day observance, which was originally scheduled for Sept. 21, because of the bad weather condition on that day.

Flores said celebrating the International Peace Day each year also  emphasizes that  their school is conducive for learning.

WSR vice principal Marjorie Pangelinan said the celebration was very significant to the students and to the community.

“We promote peace so we can live in a world of peace and harmony,” she added.

Kim Concepcion was the other event coordinator this year.
