According to Department of Public Safety acting spokesman Jason T. Tarkong, DPS received a call reporting the discovery of human remains northeast of a residence in Dandan at 2:04 p.m.
Tarkong said Officer Jesse Seman who responded to the scene met the two teenagers, 15 and 19 years old, who made the discovery.
Tarkong said Seman saw human bones and a piece of a human skull.
He called DPS and requested for crime scene technicians and detectives.
Tarkong said the two teenagers were in the jungle by the beach at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday hunting for crabs to be used as bait for fish.
The teenagers told Seman that one of them picked up what he thought was a rock and realized it was a human bone.
The teenager continued to dig and discovered what appeared to be human bones. That was when the two teenagers called the police.
Tarkong said based on the preliminary investigation, detectives and crime scene technicians believed that the human remains date back from World War II.
He said CNMI Historic Preservation Office staff arrived at the scene after they were contacted by the crime scene technicians and detectives.
