Residents can also use these containers “for storage purposes” but only in the backyard.
“In cases where someone else actually wants to develop a residence out of them, we would require an architectural standard. Stock-piled containers will be prohibited,” he added.
Saipan used to host some 30 garment factories that regularly shipped clothing products to major labels in the U.S.
Some of these factories have left behind containers big enough to house a family.
“Well, I think people just find them to be functional things. They can produce a house out of them or make convenient storage lockers,” Wyatt said about the containers.
The Zoning Board is scheduled to hold a special meeting on Feb. 10 to discuss amendments to the law.
Wyatt said public hearings are scheduled to be held next month to hear comments from residents regarding the proposed amendments.
