Zoologist here to talk about whales, dolphins

The presentation will be held at the multi-purpose center in Susupe tomorrow afternoon.

Biologist John Furey said Dr. Charles W. Potter will be answering questions about whales and dolphins, and will share facts discovered over the past 30 years about marine mammals that are on the beach or are reef-stranded.

“We are urging everyone to come and attend this rare chance to ask whatever questions you may have, and learn all you can from Dr. Potter,” Furey said.

His visit is hosted by the CNMI Coastal Resources Management Office, the Division of Fish and Wildlife Fisheries Program, and the Asia Pacific Academy of Science, Education, and Environmental Management.

Furey said the group is conducting training for marine mammal stranding responders on Guam and Saipan.

Potter and his colleagues from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Hawaii Pacific University are teaching local biologists about the latest methods in gathering helpful scientific information from stranded marine mammals.

In the region, Furey said  stranding usually involves live or dead beached whales, and dolphins which are relatively uncommon events.
