LIEUTENANT Gov. Arnold I. Palacios on Tuesday said after nearly a year of planning, the long-awaited repaving of Beach Road and Airport Road will begin this month.
It will be the first time that Airport Road will be repaved since it was constructed decades ago, he added.
The first two phases of the Beach Road project will cover the area from Hopwood Middle School in Chalan Piao to American Memorial Park.
Palacios said these projects will be funded by various sources, including Capital Improvement Project monies.
He said the administration wants to see road repairs on every road on Saipan, Rota, and Tinian, beginning with the main highways.
So far, there are five highway road renovation projects, of which only two or three have been contracted.
“It has been a long time coming… [We were able] to look at where the challenges are going to be, and then [we] collectively resolved it,” Palacios said.
The administration has been working with the Department of Public Works to not only repave the roads, but to also install traffic lights at busy intersections, such as near Garapan Central Park, Sugar King Park, and the NMI Museum, he added.
Palacios said more details regarding these road renovation projects will be announced within next week.
“I am very happy that we are well on our way and [can] move on to the next projects,” he added.
