Man allegedly steals bus, leads police chase

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man was arrested on suspicion of stealing a bus and leading officers with the Guam Police Department on a chase through Yigo.

Jesse Sablan Basaliso was arrested by police Wednesday morning following reports of a stolen vehicle.

According to a press release issued by GPD, at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, police dispatch received reports of a stolen vehicle, a bus owned by Core Tech International Corp., which was spotted by Core Tech employees as it was headed toward Tanguisson Beach. The Guam Daily Post is affiliated with Core Tech.

Officers in the vicinity then intercepted the vehicle at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 28 and identified the yellow Thomas bus with the license plate number BU259, the release stated.

“Efforts to stop the bus were met with resistance as the operator, identified as Jesse Sablan Basaliso, refused to comply with commands to pull over using blue lights and sirens and (public address) system. The pursuit continued, leading officers onto Route 9 near Chalan Ramirez when the operator began brake-checking officers as it was observed the bus would attempt to come to an erratic pause and continued forward movement,” said the release.

As the bus continued and reached Marine Corps Drive and the main gate of Andersen Air Force Base, Basaliso allegedly turned into the military base, “however, collided with a concrete barrier.” Traffic congestion then forced Basaliso to come to a halt, which is when police approached the bus, the release stated.

“Despite initial resistance, officers were able to restrain and apprehend the suspect,” GPD confirmed in the release.

Basaliso was then taken into custody and arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, criminal mischief, criminal trespass, eluding a police officer, having no driver’s license, resisting arrest and obstructing government operations.

Basaliso has since been confined at the Department of Corrections, and the case was forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General.

Basaliso, who is also known as Jesse Taitano Basaliso, Jesse Sablan, Jesse T. Sablan and Jesus T. Sablan, was released from DOC on Feb. 1 after he was arrested on suspicion of criminal trespass and disorderly conduct, but he was not charged in the Superior Court of Guam.

Prison records also show Basaliso has an extensive record of confinement that dates back to two separate cases in 2006 when he was charged with misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, along with felony charges of second-degree robbery, terrorizing and use of a deadly weapon in the commission of a felony.

Over the next three years, Basaliso was in and out of federal custody for charges in the District Court of Guam related to an armed robbery at a convenience store in Barrigada, federal court records show.
