Man arrested for impersonating police captain

FOR impersonating a narcotics unit police captain, Nick Jones Jr., 26, was arrested by the Department of Public Safety on Friday, and was charged with disturbing the peace, assault, and impersonating an officer.

In a complaint, police stated that on March 26, 2022, at around 10 p.m., an officer reported that a commotion was happening outside the DPS main station.

The officer met with Jones who told the officer that he was a police captain and was working undercover for the narcotics unit.

Jones said he had been watching two men with a hidden camera inside the air-conditioning vent of their car.

The officer, for his part, saw a silver sedan park nearby and identified it as being operated by Jones.

The officer also recognized it as the vehicle involved in another disturbing the peace incident earlier that night.

The officer called the victims of that other incident who arrived at the scene and  identified Jones as the suspect in the earlier incident.

Another police officer arrived and observed two other men standing by a gray Toyota C-HR whose trunk and doors were wide open. The officer said the trunk mat, a box, and a bucket containing items were all on the ground including the rear seats that had been detached from their factory position.

One of the two men told police  that he and another man left a friend’s place in Dandan and were headed to his companion’s residence in Chalan Kanoa.

As they were approaching his friend’s residence, the man said a silver sedan stopped in front of their car, blocking their way, and then Jones got out of the vehicle and approached them.

The man told police that out of fear, he reversed his vehicle, left the area, and headed north on Beach Road.

He said the silver sedan drove behind them and kept driving close while turning its headlights on and off.

The man said he then drove to the police station to seek help.

There, Jones pulled up behind the man’s car,  got out  and asked, “Where are the three girls? Where did you drop them off?”

The two men told Jones that it was just them and they had just come from a friend’s house in Dandan.

Jones told the two men that he was a police officer as he instructed them to get out of the vehicle and present their driver’s license.

The two men complied and sat on the curb.

Jones then started searching in the trunk of the car, “throwing stuff out while making his way to the front seat. Jones kept going back and forth between the two men and the Toyota C-HR,” police said.

Jones told the two men, “I’m going to twist your heads 10 times! I’m a police officer!”

Jones then  hit one of the men with a hat and threw a rag at the other man, police said.

The two men told police that they were afraid of Jones and complied with everything Jones instructed them to do because they believed he was a police officer.

Police arrested Jones who was then escorted to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained.

On Monday, Jones appeared before Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio for a bail hearing.

Judge Kim-Tenorio allowed Jones to post 10% of the $10,000 cash bail after submitting a $9,000 unsecured bond.

At the hearing, Jones was represented by Assistant Public Defender Karie Comstock while Assistant Attorney General Steve Kessel appeared for the government.

Jones was ordered to return to court on April 6 at 10 a.m. for a preliminary hearing and on April 11 at 9 a.m. for an arraignment.

No other information about the defendant was available as of press time Tuesday evening.
