Chauncey Tarkong, also known as John Chokai, stole $200 from Toribiong and altered his check with intent to defraud, the AGO stated.
Tarkong appeared in court for arraignment last week and pleaded not guilty.He was released from custody after posting a $200 surety bond.His status conference was set for Nov. 7 at 9 a.m.The affidavit of probable cause submitted to court stated that Tarkong on June 29 purchased $30 of gas at the NECO Plaza Shell gas station using the stolen check as payment.The affidavit stated that the cashier gave Tarkong $170 change for his $200 check.The check was later returned after the bank discovered that it was forged.The cashier identified Tarkong as the one who signed the name of Johnson Toribiong on the check but signed the back of the check with the name of “Kennedy Joseph.”The affidavit stated that Tarkong admitted stealing the checkbook and forging signatures in one of the checks.
