SUPERIOR Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho has sentenced John Peter A. Blas to nine months in prison for assault and disturbing the peace.
Blas was sentenced to one year imprisonment with the first nine months to be served day by day without the possibility of parole, early release or other similar programs.
The remaining three months of the sentence were suspended but may be imposed in whole for any violation of law by the Office of the Adult Probation, the judge added.
Blas will also be placed on two-year supervised probation after serving his sentence. He was ordered to report to the probation office the day after he is released from the Department of Corrections.
Blas will likewise pay a $25 court fee, and a probation fee to be assessed by the probation office.
Blas shall have no direct or indirect contact with the victim in the case.
Through Assistant Public Defender Karie Comstock, Blas pled guilty to the charge of assault and disturbing the peace.
Assistant Attorney General Heather Barcinas represented the government.
According to the information filed against Blas, or about May 11, 2022, he “unlawfully offered or attempted, with force or violence, to strike, beat, wound, or do bodily harm to [the victim], to wit: defendant threatened [the victim] with a weapon, in violation of 6 CMC § 1201(a).” The victim was not injured.
Also on the same day, Blas “did unlawfully and willfully commit an act which reasonably annoyed or disturbed the peace of [the victim], depriving him of his right to peace and quiet, or which provokes a breach of peace, in violation of 6 CMC § 3101(a).”
After the hearing, Blas was remanded to the custody of Corrections to start serving his sentence.
Judge Camacho vacated the bench trial scheduled for Nov. 16, 2022.
