Mayor’s verification no longer needed for SNAP qualification

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Individuals receiving assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or those who may be thinking of applying for the program, have one less document they need to submit, according to the lieutenant governor.

The Department of Public Health and Social Services’ Division of Public Welfare and SNAP “are no longer requiring mayors’ verifications for SNAP applications and renewals,” Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio said Thursday during an Interagency of Homelessness and Office of Homelessness Assistance and Poverty Prevention meeting.

To apply for SNAP, which was formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, applicants needed to provide proof of residency, which up until recently meant a trip to their village mayor’s office.

“Which will hopefully relieve some burden from the mayors’ offices. All the SNAP beneficiaries and applicants can use driver’s licenses, utility bills or Guam ID that have their residential address on it to satisfy the proof of residency requirement. That is something that is going to be beneficial to improving the processing time,” Tenorio said.

To apply for SNAP, applicants will need to provide the following documents for each member of their immediate household:

• A copy of a form of identification.

• Social Security card.

• Proof of citizenship, birth certificate.

• Documents noting earned and unearned income.

• Documents showing employment status.

• Pregnancy statement.

• Disability statement.

• School enrollment verification.

• Deductible expenses, rent mortgage, utility bills.

• Resources, bank account statements.

• Real property tax statement.

• Guardianship or child custody court documents.
