MHS student offered scholarship grant by University of Pennsylvania

MARIANAS High School senior student One An has received an offer of a scholarship grant from the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution.

In a letter, the university’s vice provost and dean of admissions, E. Whitney Soule, congratulated the 17-year-old One An, and invited him to join the College of Arts and Sciences’ Class of 2027.

“It is time to celebrate!” Soule said. “Extending this invitation to you means many things. It means high fiving with the Quaker mascot and throwing toast on to Franklin Field. It means a late-night trip for a Philly cheesesteak (or vegan seitan steak). It means learning with our extraordinary faculty members as you discover your next great pursuit, favorite book, or fresh idea. It means there are people here — who you haven’t even met yet — who are waiting to cheer you on, lift you up and help you grow.”

Soule also informed One An that the admission team reviewed thousands of applications “and we searched for students who showed us academic commitment, curiosity, and care for others.”

“We choose you because we saw those characteristics throughout you,” Soule said.

After reviewing One An’s family’s financial information, Soule said “we are pleased to offer you financial aid for the 2023-2024 academic year. At Penn, we are proud to support your demonstrated financial need for four years with a combination of grants and work-study.”

One An is the son of Doyi Kim, and the grandson of P&A Corp. President and CNMI Korean Cultural Center Chairman Kim Hong Kyun.
