New power generators not yet ready to be used — PPUC

In an interview, Baules said the construction of the generators’ foundation has not started yet, and it may take four months to complete the facility.

He said July next year is the estimated date to start the use of the generators as the PPUC engineers need a couple of months to start assembling the engines parts.

“We are looking around July as the possible date to start the operation, by then everything was installed.” Baules said.

He said the Engineers need to remove all the parts that have been exposed to clean it before they install it.

The two generators came from Japan. They arrived in the port on Nov. 6. They were supposed to arrive on Palau in May, but due to weight capacity and problem with the shipping company it was moved to Nov. 6.

Baules said the machines have a weight capacity of 53 tons each, while the generators have 19 tons. He said that two cranes were needed to lift up the machines from the Palau port ground.

The new generators were purchased for $4 million and will be placed in Malakal power plant.

The two new generators with five megawatts each will increase the current 12 megawatts power supplies of PPUC. They have a life expectancy of about 25 years.
