SENIOR high school student Jed Santa Theresa took his oath as the new student representative to the Board of Education Thursday evening at Sinapalo Elementary School on Rota where BOE held a meeting.
A student of Dr. Rita Hocog Inos Junior-Senior High School, Santa Theresa will represent more than 10,000 elementary, middle and high school students of the Public School System to the governing and policy-making body of the CNMI school district.
BOE Chairman Andrew L. Orsini administered the oath of office during a ceremony witnessed by BOE Vice Chairman Herman Atalig of Rota, Secretary/Treasurer Maisie B. Tenorio of Saipan, Gregory Borja of Saipan, Antonio Borja of Tinian, Non-Public School Rep. Dr. Ron Snyder, acting Commissioner of Education Eric Magofna, other members of the PSS leadership team Rota students, teachers, staff, and parents.
The board meeting was also live-streamed.
“Let me welcome you to your Board of Education family,” the BOE chairman told the new student representative. “Our board members are here with you to work with you in addressing, in the best we can, the needs of your (fellow) students.”
BOE Vice Chairman Atalig thanked Santa Theresa for his willingness to represent his fellow students on the board.
BOE Secretary/Treasurer Tenorio, who chairs the Student Issues & Community & Parental Programs Committee, told Santa Theresa: “I look forward to working with you. The…committee is where you can communicate with the board: by asking questions and participating in our activities and meetings.”
Tenorio likewise extended her appreciation to RHI principal D. Tanya King and Sinapalo Elementary School principal Daisy Quitugua for hosting the PSS and BOE officials during the board meeting.
Acting Commissioner of Education Magofna expressed his office’s readiness to work with the new student representative.
“I am extending a warm welcome to our student leader, Jed Santa Theresa, on behalf of your Public School System. We are here ready to work with you,” Magofna added.
Following his swearing-in, Santa Theresa participated in his first-ever board meeting.
