Ngerkebesang youths set up anti-smoking signs

The activity is part of the Office of State Incentive Grant, Council of Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP) and the Hamlet of Ngerkebesang’s efforts to reduce consumption of alcohol and tobacco among kids age 12 to 20.

According Michael Meyar, Chairman of Council of Substance Abuse Prevention (COSAP), now that kids are not in school, he wants them to stay away from stores that are selling alcohol and tobacco.

Since the stores in Ngerkebesang don’t have any advertisements on cigarettes and alcohol, the kids just put up billboards which they themselves made to continuously remind the community especially the kids about the bad effects of drinking and smoking.

“Even though Ngerkebesang Hamlet has no problems with drinking and smoking among minors, Legislator Clarence Saka still wants to be proactive about it,” said Meyar.

At present, Meyar is also holding similar activities with Meyuns Hamlet. He said he will continue to monitor the two hamlets for a couple more months and then move on to other hamlets for the same project.
