Gov’t to implement alien registration fee

The president told reporters yesterday that this provision will be incorporated in the current immigration regulation.

The president has tried to insert this provision in the proposed supplemental budget for Fiscal Year 2010.

Members of the Olbiil Era Kelulau however rejected the proposal.

Under the new fee system, in August non-Palauan workers, or foreigners residing in Palau will have to register and pay $25.

The president said this is also a way of monitoring the numbers of foreign workers in Palau.

He said this plan however still has to undergo administrative procedure by conducting public hearings and acceptance of comments to the regulation changes.

The president said Congress, by law can stop the implementation of the new fee scheme.

He said however, that amendment through a legislation is no longer needed to implement the new fee.
