NMI chief justice swears in new lawyer

GREGORY Paul Cenac received his certificate and signed the official Roll of Attorneys Book after he was sworn in by CNMI Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexandro Castro Tuesday at the Manamko’ Center.

Cenac is Superior Court Associate Judge Teresa Kim-Tenorio’s law clerk. His parents, Greg and Cecilia Cenac, flew in from Colorado to attend the ceremony.

“I have only been on island for about six months,” Cenac said. “In those six months, I have seen a tight-knit community that cares about the health and safety of its people, especially in the era of Covid-19.”

He added, “I have been all across the world, and I have to say I have fallen in love with the people of the CNMI who I think are some of the kindest, warmest, and most welcoming people I have ever met.”

He said a “perfect example of the care that this community has for its people can be seen in the judiciary’s treatment courts, such as the Drug Court and [the] newly established Mental Health Court.”

Cenac said these are programs “that are not about punishing community members for wrongdoing, but rather treatment of underlying issues, reintegration into the community, and recovery.”

Cenac said his “other half hopes to teach on Saipan.”

“From the moment my other half and I arrived on Saipan,” he added, “our experience has been amazing, thanks in no small part to the community.”

He said his parents, “who only arrived on island two weeks ago have already had the exact same experience and have felt welcomed wherever they went. They have said to me on multiple occasions, ‘I see why you love it here.’ I am honored to be admitted to practice law in the CNMI, and to continue to serve this great community for years to come.”

Cenac received his Juris Doctor from George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C. and Admiralty & Maritime L.L.M. from Tulane University Law School in Louisiana.

He said he is looking forward to practicing law on Saipan after serving as law clerk for Judge Kim-Tenorio.
