NMI Democrats eye diversity in leadership

THE Democratic Party of NMI will elect up to 28 members of its central executive committee in a general membership meeting on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Gov. Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

Any party member may be nominated to the CEC. “It is the party’s intention that the CEC membership should reflect the diversity of the CNMI with regard to race, color, creed, gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, national origin, age, and economic status,” party chair Jonathan Cabrera said.

“All newly elected officers will serve a two-year term, and we look forward to activating a variety of committees,” he added.

“We are excited for the 2024 local elections and our first ever NMI Democratic presidential primary that will also happen in 2024. We encourage all of our supporters to come out, learn more about our party, become a member, and join our committees. We need everyone to do their part and get involved in Saipan, Tinian, and Rota,” he said.

The party’s vice chair, Luella Marciano, reflected on the Democrats’ “important work” across the Marianas.

“Lots of amazing things to be proud of, and having that one-on-one direct line of communication with our elected Democratic officials, is important. I think that aside from being transparent, our elected officials are easy to get in touch with and will answer our people’s call. I’m really proud of the work we are doing on and off the bench. With Democrats like Tina Sablan as the governor’s senior policy advisor working pro-bono and our Secretary of Labor Leila Staffler both adhering to their Unity Pledge and working closely with this administration is to be commended,” Marciano said.

The party’s secretary, Melia Johnson, said, “I’m looking forward to the party establishing our NMI Young Democrats group, and reconnecting in person with our active women’s committee. There are a lot of great committees that could use reliable leaders, so I encourage our members and supporters to sign up at www.nmidems.org and let’s get moving.”

Treasurer Shawna Indalecio said: “I’m a Democrat and I love our diverse party that is delivering for the people of the CNMI. We have party members from all different ethnicities, age groups, with strong female representation, elected officials from various backgrounds, and I am proud to be a voice for the LGBTQIA+ community in the leadership of the party. Biba Democrats!”

Those who want to attend the party meeting can register at www.nmidems.org/. They can also register on-site beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 15, 2023, at the multi-purpose center.
