Obesity in Fiji children a major concern

Apart from obesity, cigarette smoking by children is also of concern to the health authorities.

The Ministry of Health in Fiji has revealed that some children and young people have type two diabetes, which is normally confined to adults only.

The national advisor for non-communicable diseases, Dr. Isimeli Tukana, said children and younger people eat less vegetables.

“Only two percent of those above 15 years old eat fruits and vegetables which is in abundance in the country,” Tukana said.

He said obesity is a chronic disease and a lot of studies have been done by the ministry on high school students.

“The latest is a global health survey which is pointing towards obesity,” he said.

“A lot of children are eating junk and processed food, which are not good for their health.
