OES students share their forensic competition experiences

(OES) — Oleai Elementary School competitors have been consistent in placing top five in the events they joined in since the start of the virtual monthly qualifying competition of the Primary Grades Forensic Conference or PGFC for kindergarten to 5th grade. They bagged thirty-eight awards in different events for the two divisions in the 4th competition in January. Some of them are happy to share their PGFC experience.

In the K-2 division, second grade student Hallie Padolina who has been competing since September said, “I learned new words and facts from different Impromptu topics that helped me improve my Star Reading score. I also meet other students and make new friends during after school practice.”

First timer competitor Ram Israel Punzalan, the newest member among the OES competitors said, “I like PGFC because it can helps me in reading because I want to be the best reader in my class. I also like learning the local language when I practice my CCLHS (Chamorro Carolinian Language Heritage Studies) piece.

In the 3-5 Division, the following fourth graders said that PGFC helped them gain more confidence in speaking and improving their reading skills.

Marvic Javaluyas said, ” I have been joining PGFC since 1st grade. It really helps me improve my reading comprehension and every time I get a place in each category, it makes me happy because I know I make my mama proud.”

Mario Sedanza Jr. said, “I joined PGFC for a few reasons. I wanted to do something to make my mom and dad happy and proud when I win awards. My favorite event is Impromptu Speaking which helps me improve my skills in public speaking. Practicing for the competition also helps me understand new words that I could not understand before.”

Being an ESL (English as Second Language) student, Erricka Long said, “I joined PGFC to improve my English and grades. Chinese is my first language that I learned at home. Doing PGFC is also fun, especially when you win in your events.

“PGFC competition helps you and I get better at reading words fluently. Every time I join, I push myself to keep practicing and get better at the piece I am practicing. Should you join PGFC? It’s optional. If you love reading, you should give it a try,” Alexander Salundaguit challenged the other students.

“I remember reading that CCLHS (Chamorro Carolinian Language Heritage Studies) piece when I joined PGFC in 1st grade. It helped me learn to read and speak our local language. Now that I am in fourth grade, I hope PGFC will help me improve my English reading skills,” said Jovanalyn Mettao.

“I really enjoy doing PGFC. It helps me memorize things and practice my English to reach my Reading goals. PGFC trains me to do different events like Choral Speaking and Duo Interpretation which I don’t know how to do before,” said Isabel Maximina Carreon who tried joining PGFC for the first time.

Leila Leightly who is a new competitor this school year said, “I like PGFC because it improved my grammar by learning new words. It also makes my parents happy and proud of me especially when I win first place.”

Another first timer competitor Keanalise Sablan said, “My Mom wanted me to join PGFC so I can improve my Reading goals, and I also would like to compete with other people. I also enjoy practicing and taking videos with my classmates for group events after school.”

Multilingual learner Enyan Tang who is also new to PGFC said, “I learned a lot of new words when I joined PGFC. I learned how to read more fluently with expression by practicing my piece.

Hanna Gabrielle Ramos said, I learned teamwork when I performed Duo Interpretation with my partner Enyan Tang. I learned how to read words that I never heard before like “enormously.” I also learned how to pronounce words I could not pronounce like “mischievous.”

Fifth grade Tian Mei Jia said, I always join the PGFC competition every month because it is fun winning every time. It also helped me improve my public speaking skills by doing different events like Dramatic and Humorous Interpretations.

Hanna Marie Padolina, who has been competing since she was in 1st grade, learned how to do all the events in PGFC including CCLHS. “I enjoy reading stories and PGFC helped me read kind of faster. Impromptu Speaking helped me build up my confidence in public speaking. Competing makes me feel happy because my parents were happy when I placed top 5 in my events.

The administration, faculty & staff, and parents of Oleai Elementary would like to extend their congratulations to the following winners who participated in this competition. Oleai Elementary School offers other learning opportunities like the PGFC after school program under Coach Esther Manzano to cater to students who would like to improve their reading and speaking skills through competition.
