Official: Election commission addressing absentee voter issues

COMMONWEALTH Election Commission Executive Director Kayla S. Igitol on Thursday said  she had heard the concerns of some lawmakers and members the public regarding certain absentee voters.

Sen. Victor B. Hocog of Rota has said that some “people have been allowed to vote when they’ve never been in the CNMI. Never. Not even once. But they were allowed to vote. This is a very serious situation that our people are experiencing here…. For those people that have been given the right to continue to vote outside the CNMI, they are not suffering like the people that are staying here and voting for change.”

Igitol said the commission does look into issues when there are grounds to challenge a voter’s registration.

“In regards to absentee [voters], we’re going to have to wait until we get the request in,” she said, referring to an absentee ballot.

“Then, we can look into it and see if we need to challenge those voters. But we’re doing the same for registration as well…. For our mail-in registrations that have been coming in, we have been looking into them to see if the CEC does have grounds to challenge some voters. So, we are looking into those. I hear the concerns of the senators and of the public, and the CEC board, myself, and our staff are looking into those,” she said.
