Asanuma filed his complaint concerning the tent set up by the supporters of Tellei outside the PEC where the Koror central box was set up for the voters who cast their vote in Koror.
Allegedly the tent was put up 100 feet from the voting place which is a violation of the election law. Under the law, no campaign activities are to be held 500 feet away from the polling precinct.
“Under the law no campaign within 500 feet. But for us we saw them not campaigning. They were just there gathering. But for the other party protesting, it was a violation,” Lulu Ermaluuk, PEC election officer said in an interview.
Based on the unofficial result, Tellei garnered 196 votes against Asanuma who got 139 votes.
The Melekeok State has 577 registered voters but 351 voted in the Special election.
The election result will be certified within five days after the election. However due to election protest, the certification of the results was put on hold.
“The result is still unofficial we don’t know yet the certification of the election result until our boss meets with the Attorney General and resolve the problem.” Ermaluuk added.
The Board of Commission have yet to hold a meeting since most of them are off -island.
The Special election was held on May 4 to fill in the gubernatorial seat vacated by former Gov. Lazarus Kodep.
Kodep stepped down from his post on March after he was convicted and sentenced for misuse of public funds.
