WASHINGTON (Island Times/Pacnews) — Compact negotiations have begun with Palau representatives meeting with the newly appointed U.S Ambassador Joseph Yun and his team, for the first time this past week in Washington, D.C.
Among the topics that Palau raised is the continuation of U.S federal program eligibility, such as postal services, FEMA and Veterans Affairs.
Led by Minister of Finance and Compact Chief Representative Kaleb Udui Jr., the Palau team includes Ambassador Hersey Kyota, Minister of Human Resources, Culture, Tourism, and Development Ngiraibelas Tmetuchl, Lindsay Timarong, chairman of the Compact of Free Association Trust Fund Board, and members of the technical team from the Compact Review Advisory Group.
The negotiations will affect Palau’s economic development and economic assistance from the U.S. beyond 2024.
