The people cast their votes on Tuesday and agreed on most of these proposals.
The Palau Election Commission counted the ballots on the amendments on Friday afternoon and finished counting for all 16 States yesterday.The results has yet to be released but PEC Chairman Santos Borja in a phone interview yesterday said that most of the proposed amendments got a yes votes than no.This is the first time that Palau held an election for Constitution amendments.People had to agree or disagree the following 22 amendments:• CP No. 2-252 Eligibility to hold office of President and Vice President.• CP No. 2-253 President and Vice President to be elected separately.• CP No. 2-254 CCD1 Date and time inauguration of President and Vice President.• CP No. 2-255 To provide for trial by jury.• CP No. 2-256 Eligibility to hold office of OEK.• CP No. 2-257 Compensation for OEK members.• CP No. 2-258 To set installation date for OEK• CP No. 2-259 To repeal term limit for OEK members.• CP No. 2-260 To separate Appellate Division and Trial Division Justices.• CP No. 2-265 Effective date for amendments to the Constitution• CP No. 2-267 To guarantee academic freedom.• CP No. 2-268 CCD1 Defining citizenship and multiple citizenship.• CP No. 2-268 A Naturalization of adopted child• CP No. 2-269 Voting by absentee ballot• CP No. 2-270 Foreign ownership of land for diplomatic purposes• CP No. 2-271 Privately owned land lease up to 99 years.• CP No. 2-272 National government to assist traditional leaders in preservation, protecting and promotion of Palauan heritage, cultural, language, customs and traditions.• CP No. 2-274 To ban same sex marriage.• CP No. 2-275 Free and compulsory education for grades one to 12.• CP No. 2-276 Preventive health care as fundamental right.• CP No. 2-278 Palauan language to be prevailing language of Constitution.• CP No. 2-280 The territorial jurisdiction.
