Quitugua: It’s time to consolidate Democratic Party

Quitgua, the only Democratic member of the local House of Representatives, said he is  unaware of what is  going on with the party, “because nobody informs me.”

He said he does not have any idea about  individuals who may want to run on the Democratic Party’s slate next year.

Quitugua said his party needs to reorganize and its leadership must look back to what went wrong in the past.

The organization, the membership and the public sentiments about the party should be assessed, he added..

The officers of the party should come together and try to draft a party agenda that reflects the people’s concern, the lawmaker said.

Quitugua believes that the local Democrats can get more leverage with the U.S. Congress if the local party reorganizes and fully participates in the political process.

He said he will respect whatever the party’s decision will be in selecting its candidates for the general elections next year.

Since 1997, the party’s membership has declined and it has been replaced by the Covenant Party — a breakaway faction of the local GOP — as the CNMI’s other major party.
