Japan Embassy on Friday night launched the Kurosawa Watercolors exhibition, belonging to a collection of artwork done by Mr. Takenosuke Kurosawa last Oct. 10.
The paintings were remarkable depiction of Palau from 1934 to 1940.The paintings depicted part of Palau’s history as seen through the eyes of Kurosawa. Kurosawa was in Palau from 1934 to 1940, he was one of the business associates of the pineapple canning factory in Ngermekesang of Ngeremenlengui State called Nanyo Houri Company.Among the artworks of Kurosawa were Bai er Meketii which is now located at the current office of the House of Traditional Leaders of Koror State.Another painting on display was the sunset view at Ngermeduu Bay, Rock Island view from Airai State.Another painting on display was the Sacred Heart Church said to be painted from 1930 and 1940.Mandy Etpison, an artist, photographer, author and co-founder of the Etpison Museum and Honorary Consul of France to Palau presented to Japan Embassy’s charge d’ affaires Kunio Nakamura the paintings.The Japan embassy said that although the paintings are 70 years old, they are still in pristine condition as the day they were first set on the canvas.The collection consists of 23 paintings, there are nine pieces on display at the embassy , six pieces can be viewed at the Meduu Ribtak Restaurant of the Palau Pacific Resort and eight pieces more are being exhibited at the Etpison Museum that depict local scenes, people and landscapes of Yap State, FSM.Nakamura said that the embassy extends its appreciation to the Etpison Museum and Christina Alonzo, granddaughter of Kurosawa.The paintings will be displayed at the embassy from Oct. 13 to Dec. 9.
