“We want to help make our community look beautiful and hopefully offset some carbon footprints by planting carbon dioxide-sucking plants,” Pres. Tellei said. The beautification program has become one of the school’s annual activities where employees get a chance to spend quality time together.
Tellei added that they have asked permission from the Ministry of Public Infrastructure about it. The school provided the tools and materials for the project including gloves, plants, fertilizers, dirt and compost.
“Every single employee of PCC planted one box consisting of three plants: Tea leaf, hibiscus and croton,” he said. The president planted the first box, and the rest of the employees followed.
“It is easier if each person is responsible. So after two hours we were done.” He added that they still have more plants, but they ran out of dirt. So they will resume planting next week and plan to finish the whole thing before the New Year.
The plants are expected to grow bushy so Tellei said they plan to trim them. “In one box we’ll probably cut everything and leave only hibiscus; one section we’ll leave tea leaf; and one we will leave croton.”
In another story, the school is set to soft open its brand new library before the year ends. “The grand opening will be in February, but wanted to have a soft opening it tomorrow, Dec. 24, it so we can use it already,” explained Tellei.
All faculty and students are invited to join in the ceremony, which will be held in front of the new library building at 11:00 am. A Christmas luncheon will follow at the Mesekiu Bai.
