A check worth $500 was turned over on Wednesday to Ibuuch Tomoichi, Principal of PHS, and Jack Meltel, Chairman of PHS Parents and Teachers Association, by the officers of PHS Class of 1979 organization headed by its president, Terry Ngiraingas.
“We had a scholarship program a couple of years ago, but we decided to stop it and give our donations directly to the school instead so the money can be used for whatever school improvements are needed,” said Josephine Ulengchong, Class of 1979 member.
The PHS Class of 1979 is a non-profit organization composed of more than 100 graduates of PHS. They have been raising funds to provide scholarship to Palau High School seniors.
“We decided to give the money to the school instead because the students we were supporting kept going to the main land and they never come back,” said Ngiraingas. “And they’re not doing anything to continue and help the community.”
The organization raises funds by making and selling food. They also ask for donations from other members who are living outside of Palau.
“We also want to encourage and motivate other classes to do the same, contribute and help the school,” shared Ulengchong.
PTA Chairman Jack Meltel was thankful for the Class of 1979’s donation. “We look forward for many more,” he said.
The active members of Class of 1979 includes Terry E. Ngiraingas, President; Leilani Pedro, Secretary; Noe Yalap, Vice President, Jowas Wasisang, Treasurer; and members Josephine Ulengchong, Victor Remengasau, Lourigine Idip, Laverne Merep, Daniel Makilong, Don Bukurrow, Elmis Mesubed, Steven Kanai, Inez Remengasau, Dibech Ellis, Gale Ngirmidol and Wanda Adolf.
