The nonworking local holiday is observed today, Thursday.

“This is the first time in many years that a roadside waving was held by PSS to celebrate Covenant Day,” said Commissioner of Education Dr. Alfred B. Ada, who hopes to make it an annual event.

Ada, along with the school system’s senior directors — Dr. Rizalina Liwag, Jackie Quitugua, and Dr. Yvonne Pangelinan — joined up to 300 PSS personnel in displaying signs and flags while waving at motorists from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Also participating were personnel from Rota’s Sinapalo Elementary School, led by Principal Daisy Quitugua, and Dr. Rita H. Inos Jr. Sr. High School led by Vice Principal Annette Calvo. They were on Saipan to receive professional development training.

Also on Wednesday, all of the 20 public schools in the CNMI held their own Covenant Day celebration.

The Covenant, which was ratified by NMI voters and approved by the U.S. Congress, was signed into law by President Gerald R. Ford on March 24, 1976 to establish the CNMI in political union with the U.S.
