Remengesau during his weekly conference said he is prepared to retire from public service, but reiterated that “in politics never say never.”
“I am now preparing my mindset to retire fully from public service,” the president said.
However, his constituents had said that he is too young to retire from politics.
He said he has received suggestions that he should consider running as vice president, another option was that he run for the Senate.
He said that his supporters have also suggested that he retire for four years from public service and make a comeback after.
He said that most of the time, “political plans are not totally up to the you.”
He said that there are instances that supporters will circulate petitions to encourage an individual to run for office.
Rememgesau will end his term this year after serving two terms as president.
He was a senator, then won the vice president position prior to being elected president in 2001.
In 2004 , he was re-elected president after defeating Polycarp Basilius.
In an earlier interview in Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), Remengesau said he might run for Senate.
The Election Commission has set August 6 as deadline for filing of candidacies or nominating petition.
