DUE to the unavailability of Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona of the District Court for the NMI, the jury trial of Bonifacio “Boni” Sagana, which was set for June 27, 2023, has been rescheduled.
Jury selection will now start on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at 10 a.m., and end on Friday, July 7, 2023. The jury trial will resume on Monday, July 17, 2023, at 1:30 p.m.
At a status conference on Thursday, Sagana appeared out of custody with his court-appointed attorneys David Banes and Richard Miller, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Albert Flores Jr. and Ashley Koss appeared for the federal government.
Judge Manglona said it was the court that requested a new trial date. She also said that there will be 12 jurors and two alternates.
The U.S. government is anticipating a four-day case while the defense anticipates a two-day case.
Miller also informed the court that he will be making most of the arguments while Banes will co-chair.
Sagana has pled not guilty to the charge of conspiracy to unlawfully produce an identification document. He is accused of involvement in a scheme to produce counterfeit CNMI driver’s licenses.
Sagana remains released on his personal recognizance but is prohibited from leaving the CNMI.
