Saipan Dog Control Program: Register your dogs

THE Dog Control Program of the Saipan Mayor’s Office is asking pet owners to follow the law and register their pet dogs.

According to data released by the Dog Control Program, there are only 1,205 dogs registered on Saipan while the total number of captured unregistered dogs is more than 1,500.

“There are many dogs out there that are not registered,” said Leemark Deleon Guerrero, the field supervisor of the program.

“Every year, we…impound thousands of stray dogs that are not registered. This speaks about how the owners handle their pet dogs. They have to register them,” he added.

Deleon Guerrero said the dogs currently kept at the shelter do not have collars or dog tags.

“It’s not just about following the law but if we truly care for our pets and love them, we will register them so that when they lose their dog, it can easily be found through the dog tag,” he said.

The Saipan and Northern Islands Dog Control Act requires all dogs to have a dog collar and harness with a registered dog tag.

The registration of a dog for a year costs $10; two years, $18; three years, $26; four years, $34; and five years, $42.

If a dog is impounded, the owner must pay the following fees: first impoundment, $16; second impoundment. $32; third impoundment, $47; and special impoundment, $47. An additional $5 per day will be charged if the dogs are not immediately claimed.
