Salii presents credentials to EU, Germany

However, since he has yet to present his credentials to the President of the Council of EU, he is still called “Ambassador-designate”. A suitable date for the Ambassador to go back to Brussels to become a full-pledged Ambassador to the EU is being set up by the Ministry of State.

Among the assistance Ambassador Salii has requested from the EU are those in the areas of renewable energy and economic development loan funds. He also plans to pursue development loan or grant funds from the EU Investment Bank.

Two days after becoming Palau’s first non-resident Ambassador to the EU, Ambassador Salii also became the country’s first Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.

After his trip to Brussels, the Ambassador, accompanied by Foreign Affairs Director Jeffrey “Brich” Antol, proceeded to Berlin, Germany, where he also presented his Letter of Credence to H.E. Horst Koehler, President of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The issue of global warming was discussed in relation to Climate

Change Summit in Copenhagen. Ambassador Salii mentioned that “President Koehler reiterated the need for Palau and other Small Islands States to continue voicing out their grave concern on the adverse effect of climate change and the global warming. Through continued interventions by the Palau and the Small Islands States, the world, especially the industrialized nations, would eventually hear their outcry.”
