Senators invite Obama to include Palau in his visits

In Senate Joint Resolution 8-51, 12 senators are urging Obama’s visit to Palau.

“Palau would be honored to host a presidential visit by President Obama and perceives such visit as a great sign towards future relationship of both countries,” the resolution stated.

President Obama is planning to speak with U.S. service members on Guam.. After stopping on the island, the president will travel to Indonesia where he is expected to formally launch a comprehensive partnership to broaden and enhance bilateral ties.

In Australia, Obama will hold talks with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to discuss a range of issues such as the global economic recovery, clean energy and climate change, and Afghanistan, it added.

The trip was supposed to be in March but because of the health care measure which was recently signed into law, the visit was postponed until June.

If Obama will accept the invitation, this will be the first time that Palau will be visited by a U.S. president.

Palau has hosted important U.S. officials in the past such as Arizona Sen. And presidential candidate John McCain, Congressman Nick Rahall and former Secretary of State George P. Schultz.

Palau is under the Compact of Free Association with the U.S.

Under the agreement the U.S. provides Palau with economic assistance in exchange for U.S. defense and certain other operating rights.
